With PPC advertising you can buy placement on a website where
you pay for performance (PFP) and have control over the content
of the listing and how much you want to pay for the traffic sent
to you. You bid on search terms for your ranking, and when someone
clicks on your listing, you pay the bid amount. Two of the most
popular PPC search engine advertising mediums are Google and Overture.
A Google AdWords™ campaign is based on a combination of maximum
cost-per-click (CPC -- how much you are willing to pay per click)
and clickthrough rate (CTR). This means that if you earn a higher
CTR, you are rewarded with a lower actual CPC. Their system monitors
your competition and performance and automatically charges you the
least amount possible. Google places PPC advertising at the top
and in a special column on the right side of the search engine results
page (SERP).
Overture requires a minimum monthly expenditure of $20 and approved
PPC ads appear at different locations on its partner sites such
as Yahoo!, MSN, Lycos, AltaVista, InfoSpace and CNET. PPC placement
on Overture partner sites is only factored by maximum bid amount,
not clickthrough rate.
Close supervision and a thorough knowledge of the unique characteristics
of each PPC search engine are essential for the success of your
PPC advertising campaign.
